June 2022 will be an unforgettable month for fans of the British Royal Family and elite society. From 2-5 June – the Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend – people across Britain will mark the 70th year of Queen Elizabeth II’s record-breaking reign. The 96-year-old Queen is not only the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee but also the longest-serving monarch in British history.
The Queen’s Moving Letter to Her Subjects
You may be surprised to hear that the actual date of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee doesn’t fall in June. It was in fact earlier in 2022 that the Queen reached this 70-year milestone. She’s reigned since 6 February 1952, the date on which her beloved father, King George VI, sadly passed away aged just 56. Naturally, the Queen wanted to focus on remembering him in February this year rather than celebrating her reign at that time.
She did, however, write a moving letter to her millions of subjects. ‘I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me,’ the Queen emphasised.
National Holiday on the Horizon
Because the mood wasn’t right in February, the Platinum Jubilee celebrations will be in sunny June instead – about a week before the Queen’s official birthday (11 June). To help the public get into the party spirit, 2 and 3 June are Bank Holidays. Hooray!
Platinum Jubilee merchandise is available, with particularly sophisticated items being sold by double Royal Warrant holders Fortnum & Mason. The London department store’s Happy & Glorious Hamper, inspired by the National Anthem’s lyrics, caught our eye. ‘A hamper of truly epic proportions for a celebration of even greater magnitude,’ says Fortnum’s website.
Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend Celebrations
Stunning celebrations will take place from 2-5 June. (We’re reminded of the events on the 75th anniversary of VE Day in 2020, with which the Queen was also closely involved.) Our guide to Platinum Jubilee UK events will help you make the most of the special long weekend.
The Big Jubilee Lunch (2-5 June)
Bring out the Union Jack bunting – there’ll be street parties up and down the UK! Tens of thousands of people have signed up to host a Big Jubilee Lunch, and there’ll be an extra special one at The Oval, the spectacular cricket ground in London, for charity fundraisers.
Trooping the Colour (2 June)
The Platinum Jubilee edition of this annual, televised event will see the 1st Battalion Irish Guards troop their colour (i.e. their flag) on London’s Horse Guards Parade during a breathtaking display. Over 1,000 soldiers and hundreds of horses will take part (in her younger days, the Queen herself attended on horseback). The Royal Family will wave to the crowds from Buckingham Palace’s famous balcony and watch an RAF flypast.
Platinum Jubilee Beacons (2 June)
A beacon will be lit during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Others will be lit in over 2,000 places around the UK and Commonwealth, creating a chain of light. You can find your nearest beacon-lighting event by using the Platinum Jubilee website’s interactive map.
Service of Thanksgiving (3 June)
Royals and other members of elite society will gather at the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral in London to give thanks for the Queen’s remarkable reign. Church bells will ring out around the UK.
Platinum Party at the Palace (4 June)
This majestic, three-hour concert at Buckingham Palace will feature big stars, hi-tech stages and a 10,000-strong audience (with many more people watching on TV). Sir Elton John is rumoured to be performing.
Platinum Jubilee Pageant (5 June)
Here’s an incredibly imaginative event: the Platinum Jubilee Pageant. Organisers say it’ll bring ‘the story of the Queen’s 70-year reign and our transforming society’ to life with street theatre, dance, music, and more; 10,000 people are involved. At its heart will be Buckingham Palace and the Gold State Coach used by the Queen on her coronation day all those years ago.
