This time next year Dartmouth will be in full “400 year” anniversary celebration mode! This was the year that a group of around 40 made the trip across the Atlantic to establish a new colony in “New England” – they were to be known as “The Pilgrim Fathers”. For many, Dartmouth was one of the last places in England that they would see.
There was a second boat, the Speedwell which was to make the voyage but that returned to shore. It had been repaired in Dartmouth but some say it was sabotaged after it left port. Those that still wanted to make the crossing transferred to the Mayflower and on 21 November a new chapter in history begun when the Mayflower reached Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
