Earl, Count and Countess
An earl is the nobility ranking that lies between a marquis and a viscount. It is the English equivalent of the European title "count" and has rich associations with British royalty.
After all, when you think of famous earls, counts and countesses, whose name comes to mind?
In addition to fictional characters such as Count Dracula and the Count of Monte Cristo, perhaps you'll think of Earl Spencer (the brother of Princess Diana), or maybe the Countess of Wessex (wife of Prince Edward, the Queen's youngest child)?
What is clear is that these titles are closely associated with famous, high status individuals.
What is an Earl and a Countess?
Earl: Originating from the Norse word "jarl" (meaning leader), earl is the English equivalent of the European title, "count".
Count: Is a European title of nobility that's popular with Italian clients. Related to the English word "county", a count is essentially the principal figure of a county.
Countess: Is the female equivalent of an earl and a count. This title can be used by an unmarried woman in her own right, or by the wife of a man who is an earl or a count.
